The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) organizes the Combined Graduate Prelims Exam annually for selection of candidates for the main Exam. Those who have qualified in the preliminary exam should apply again in the required procedure to take part in further stages of the selection process.
The exam is relevant to hiring for the following posts:
– Inspectors of Income Tax
– Preventive Officers in Customs
– Examiner in Customs
– Assistants in Ministries or Departments, Attached and Subordinate office of the Government of India
– Inspectors of Central Excise and Customs
– Sub-Inspectors in Delhi Police and CBI
– Sub-Inspectors in BSF, CRPF, ITBP and CISF
– Divisional Accountant, Junior Accountant, Auditor and UDCs in offices of the Indian Government
How to apply for the Prelims Exam?
You should submit the application form in the prescribed format to the concerned Regional Director.
Eligibility Criteria for Graduate Prelims
– Your age should be between 18 to 27 years for inspectors of CE/IT & Div. Acctts/Auditors/UDCs, etc; 20 to 27 years for Assistant Grade & SIs in CBI; 18 to 27 years for inspectors of CE/IT & Div. Acctts/Auditors/UDCs, etc and; 20 to 25 years for SIs in CPOs on the first day of August of the year of Examination.
– You can avail upper age limit relaxation if you belong to reserved categories such as SC, ST, and Other Backward Classes.
– You must hold a degree from a recognized institution.
– To apply for SIs in CPOs, you should preferably hold NCC ‘B’ or ‘C’ certificate or outstanding athletics or sports certificates.
– For Inspector of Central Excise and Preventive Officer Posts, you will have to satisfy the minimum standards as asked for in the exam notifications. You will also have to go through a physical test.

Syllabus – Prelims
This exam is of 2 hrs duration and has 4 sections, each holding 50 marks.
- General Intelligence & Reasoning:
You can expect questions of both verbal and non-verbal type in this section. You will have to answer questions on Semantic Classification, Symbolic/Number Classification, Figural Classification, Semantic Series, Number Series, Figural Series, Problem Solving, Word Building, Coding & de-coding, Numerical Operations, symbolic Operations, Trends, Space Orientation, Space Visualization, Venn Diagrams, Drawing inferences, Punched hole/pattern –folding & un-folding, Figural Pattern – folding and completion, Indexing, Address matching, Date & city matching, analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, spatial orientation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning and figural classification, arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning etc. The topics you will have to cover for this section include Semantic Analogy, Symbolic/Number Analogy, Figural Analogy, Classification of centre codes/roll numbers, Small & Capital letters/numbers coding, decoding and classification, Embedded Figures, Critical thinking, Emotional Intelligence, and Social Intelligence.
- General Awareness:
This section tests your general awareness. You can expect questions that test your knowledge of current events. Being thorough in Geography, Economic Scene, History, Culture, General Policy & Scientific Research helps in scoring well in this section.
- Quantitative Aptitude:
This section tests your aptitude in numbers. It covers the computation of whole numbers, decimals, Percentage, Ratio & Proportion,Square roots, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, fractions and relationships between numbers, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra & Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons , Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base, Complementary angles, Heights and Distances, Histogram, Frequency polygon, Trigonometric ratio, Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Bar diagram & Pie chart etc.
- English Comprehension:
This section tests your English comprehension and writing skills.
Tier -II (Syllabus)
Tier-II comprises of 2 sections. 2 hours is allotted for each section.
Paper-I: Quantitative Ability (100 marks)
This paper tests your number sense. You can expect questions relevant to the computation of whole numbers, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, decimals, fractions and relationships between numbers, Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Square roots, Partnership Business, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra & Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, common tangents to two or more circles, Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Trigonometric ratio, Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Complementary angles, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base, Heights and Distances, Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar diagram & Pie chart.
Paper-II: English Language & Comprehension (200 marks):
This section tests your understanding of the English Language. You can expect questions that ask you to spot the error, fill in the blanks, and the ones on synonyms, antonyms, one word substitution, spelling/detecting mis-spelt words, idioms and phrases, improvement of sentences, active/passive voice of verbs, conversion into direct/indirect narration, shuffling of sentences in a passage, cloze passage & comprehension passage, shuffling of sentence parts etc.
Personality Test/Interview
The Personality Test/ interview carry a maximum of 100 marks.
